This is the best airport to fly into. It is located on the mainland, across the lagoon from the city center of Venice (approx. 14 km / 8 miles).
Historic Venice is a car-free city. There are 4 options to get to Venice from the airport - water taxi, water bus, bus (by land), and taxi (by land). No matter which method you choose, you will have to walk (with your luggage) unless your hotel or Airbnb is on a canal or the lagoon.
Water taxi: We recommend taking a water taxi as it is the easiest and you can get dropped off directly at your hotel / place of lodging (cost is estimated 100-150 euros). If you are traveling in a group, a water taxi is most definitely your best bet as they can accommodate for 6 people. A water taxi from Marco Polo Airport will take approx. 20-30 minutes depending on where you get dropped off in Venice. The water taxis are about a 10 minute walk from baggage claim. They accept credit cards and cash (euros) but always check with the water taxi driver beforehand. You can book a water taxi ahead of time - hire a sleek motoscafo here.
Water bus: Alilaguna is the name of the company that operates the water buses that run between Marco Polo Airport and the city of Venice. The trip via water bus from Marco Polo Airport to Venice will take approx. and 75 minutes as there are multiple stops. A one-way ticket on the water bus is around 15 euros - these tickets can be purchased at the airport with credit card.
Bus (by land): There are two bus options that will get you to Venice - the ATVO buses (private - 10 euros one-way) and ACTV (public transportation - 8 euros one-way). Both of these buses will take you to Piazzale Roma in Venice which you would then need to get yourself to your hotel / place of lodging. It’s cost efficient but not efficient in terms of getting to your destination easily.
Taxi (by land): Similarly to a water taxi, this can be a costly option (approx. 50 euros) and will drop you off at the same location as the buses. You will need to get yourself to your hotel / place of lodging from Piazzale Roma in Venice so this is the most inefficient option.
If you are flying into Milan or Rome (or you are traveling around Italy before joining us in Venice), the train is a great option to get to Venice. The train station is located in Venice proper. You would need to either walk (if feasible), take a water taxi or water bus to your hotel / place of lodging.
We recommend checking in with your hotel for their suggested way of transportation for ease and comfort. They might provide their own for guests.
